Hello, Right Hand? Meet Left Hand, and Please Take Heed of What the other is Doing

I've been dreading this week....

Particularly because my inner Grover insists there's a monster at the end of it.  Particularly on Saturday.

It's a scheduling cluster#@$%, erm, nightmare.

Kelsey's Girl Scouts troupe has been working very hard on their display on Korea that will be part of the annual International Festival.  Kelsey digs learning about new cultures and ethnicities.  A lot.  Earlier in the month I was planning out my calendar, and at some point I had a jotted a note reading:

So I got about it and lo!  The Girl Scout Council of our town had scheduled the International Festival on January 29th.

But wait, Kelsey had another commitment on the 29th.  As in, my little Special K (my newest nickname for her!) had earned herself a place in the district spelling bee after kicking some booty in the school bee.

Now, some of you know that in my former career, I was something of an executive scheduler, and as such, am a little O-to-the-C-to-the-D when it comes to those pesky little things called details...so, when organizations that work with school-age children schedule major events fail to consult the academic calendars, respective to the population they serve, it grates on my nerves much like the waitstaff at the Olive Garden manage to do with the parmigiano.  Because clearly nothing says, "We're training your girls up to be short-sighted leaders - but it will be meaningful and fun along the way!" than a myopic planning maneuver such as this.  Oh, the other pet peeve is that our town's IF is not listed on the Events Planner portion of the GS COLORADO website, but the neighboring town's is listed as if it is the only one for our region, in February....seriously, these people need some admin skillz!

So there was my visceral reaction - but then Kelsey's was somewhat heartbreaking.  She quickly melted down into her woebegone state that is fairly common anytime anything deviates AT.ALL  from how she expected things to be (I feel for my future son-in-law, how I feel for him and pray for a gentle, long-suffering soul to step into that future role!).  Then she said, "Well, then I just won't do the spelling bee - I'll do the International Festival instead!"

At this point, the tiger mom in me - who normally pushes the snooze button and stays in hibernation as long as possible - came out and said, "No ma'am.  You most certainly are not going to forsake an academic activity for some fluffy little foreign fair.  You're going to spell like a champ, like it or not.  This is not the first time you'll have to make a decision in a conflict, so put on your big girl panties and suck it up, buttercup."  Because I have principles, and academics are important in them.  So are actual leadership/service learning opportunities - if they were going to help out at Habitat for Humanity that Saturday, I'd have probably let her skip the spelling bee.  But to forsake it just to go hang out with a group of girls, many of them the mean girl types at that, gabbing about Bieber and Taylor Swift and what clothes are in while they go and participate in a Cliff Notes version of world travel?  Nah.....

So....after that it stood that our weekend schedule would look like this:
Saturday:
Leave the house at 7:00 am in order to get from our northern-most district home to the southern-most district school by 7:30
7:30 - check-in at the spelling bee
8:00 - 9:30 Wait as Kelsey completes the written spelling bee exam - if she makes the cut, then we go on to oral round at 10:00
10:00-noon - Oral Round .... OR if she gets cut, make a mad dash to the other side of town and get her to the IF

Meanwhile, I will have both of the boys because Seth was informed at the beginning of the month that this was his Saturday to work.

And I'm on deadline for some grantwriting.

And holy cow am I realizing just how diligent I have to be with the time management trying to get this all done....

Also?  You extracurricular people who can't plan to save your life are putting a big rain cloud on my parade!

Spontaneity is Overrated

So the other night me and some gal pals are sitting at my kitchen table, after a long day of me decluttering the house when I say," Ladies, I think it's time to go all Dave Ramsey and have me a garage sale.  I found a lot of unnecessaries today and we need the cash, right?  Anyone in with me?"

Friend #1 pipes up, "Oh yeah, I still have a stash in the basement from last year's To Be Garage Sold pile, count me in!"

I say, "Alright - well we should do it then.  Soon."

As in, give me a week or so and then we'll make it happen, when all of a sudden:

Enter Spontaneous Epiphany!!!

Friend #2 realizes that her swanky neighborhood is having their annual neighborhood garage sale This Saturday (as in some 8 1/2 hours from NOW)!  She won't be home, but her hubby will, so we could totally use their space, and it's already advertised, cool huh?

Friend #1 and I glance at each other, weighing the possibility.  She's gonna have her boy (nearly 2) since her hubby's got a golf date, and I'm gonna have my 3 as Seth has a date with his employer, but we shrug, yeah, we can do this!

Today after sorting, and tables and price tags, oh my! I'm thinking that spontaneity is highly overrated, if not the cause for some massive productivity, as our weather forecast is in the Garage Sale Pits right now.....

Praying fervently that all this work was not in vanity - that rain will go away (it can continue doing what it's doing tonight but move along in its merry way once we hit dawn, thankyouverymuch), and that we will have a successful sale tomorrow - I got me a lot of stuff to get rid of!

**Edited to add.... That forecast picture isn't accurate - it has changed every day to match the CURRENT forecast, which is now gorgeous, but last weekend was pouring buckets.  I made a whopping $4 and Friend #1 made $7.  Gonna try again this weekend.

The Longest Week

So I lied when I told you all I'd have Foodie Friday up for last week - I had good intentions, and wrote the post with the recipe and everything, but failed to hit publish - sue me.

Good news is, y'all will have access to a yummy tortilla soup recipe as of tomorrow :)

My sister is married, and had an awesome wedding day.  Getting there was a tad stressful, as any wedding is, but we were successfully free of drama and I was so proud of everyone for making nice and playing well together.  Click on over for my pictures (some of which were taken by my kids and thus not the best!) and my brother's pictures.  More to come, but for now this is what ya get and ya won't throw a fit.  I learned many talents while preparing for my sister's wedding, including (but not limited to):

  • how to stem, pin, and arrange stephanotis, as well as the preparation/arrangement of tulips, roses, various mums and carnations into bouquets rivaling any professional florists' renditions that I've seen.
I might add that they were created at approximately 2:00am the morning OF the wedding, which was also spring forward, so it was really 3:00am!

    check those bad boys out!
  • how to cut giant tissue paper puffy flower thingies that hung from the rafters in the reception room
Channeling Martha
It was kinda like watching the HS gym turn into prom,
seeing the reception room transform
  • circa the 1500s, I learned how to shove a woman into a dress that would later cut all circulation off of her, and actually bruise her ribs.  Sorry Kaylie, but it had to be done!
We came home Monday, and I had something going on at our house (it's part of my Not Me Monday, so can't give it away!) so we had to hurry up and prep for that.

Tuesday, I had my Bible Study in the morning, it was gorgeous out so I HAD to go for a run, went grocery shopping as I'd avoided filling the food coffers since we'd be out of town, came home, cooked for a college choral group coming to our church to give a performance, dropped food off, came home and cooked for my sister, my brothers and their significant others since my brother and his GF were moving and I thought it would be nice if they could eat a homecooked meal instead of paying to eat out since all their stuff was packed.  I had a wonderful time doing all of it, and would do it all over again, but I WAS POOPED!

Yesterday, I had prayer group in the morning, but again, it was SO GLORIOUS outside I knew I'd have to take advantage of this rare March day and went for a quick run once the older kids got put on the bus.  Went to lunch after prayer group with the girls, came home, cooked a bit, kids got home (early release on Weds.) and we proceeded to soak up some rays in the yard, conducting the great Spring Poop Scoop.  Had some doggy drama, cooked dinner and then left for Wednesday night church.  Came home.  Passed out from exhaustion.

Today I am fabulously unscheduled and I'm hoping to reclaim my house from the dishes and laundry that are taunting me and holding my inner peace hostage.

Why is it that weekends away seem to take 10 days on average to recover from?

Further, why is it that Spring Forward acts as an exponent instead of a simple multiplier in the amount of recovery needed?

Oy.
