A glimpse into my child's life...

This article in Sunday's Denver Post hit home...it's our life, particularly that bolded part.

Greenwood Village - A 10-year-old boy dangled from the ceiling in a cocoon-like swing.

Nearby in a darkened room, a 5-year-old punched colored lights as they blinked on and off.

This is sensory therapy - a controversial treatment for children who scream at the touch of a T-shirt or find it difficult to eat because food feels "weird" in their mouths.

"It works. It helps these children," said Lucy Miller, director of the Sensory Therapies and Research, or STAR, Center.

Miller is a pioneer in the field of sensory therapy, which has seen an explosion of interest in the past five years. Some children's brains, she says, struggle to sort out and interpret incoming signals from skin, eyes, nose and ears - and now she's pushing for national recognition of "sensory processing disorder."

"It just all makes sense," Miller said, describing kids who disrupt class because they get dizzy every time they look up and down from their desks, and others who constantly crave touch and end up pestering and alienating peers....

  1. I am thinking of you. I am too tired to read right now, but wishing you lots of luck at Blogher and everything. Will read your testimony later. Thanks for sharing.
